A Conversation with Yui Tamano:
Representing Japan on the Global Stage

1 Can you tell us about your journey participating in the Mrs. Japan pageant and what it meant to you personally?

I’ve always been intrigued by the world of pageants, wondering what it would be like to be part of such a unique experience. My journey into this world began when a friend encouraged me to participate. Through this experience, I gained a heightened awareness of my health, particularly regarding diet and nutrition, as I needed to make adjustments to prepare for the competition. Participating in the pageant also allowed me to connect with representatives from various countries, making me truly realize the significance of representing Japan on an international stage.

2 How do you balance your roles as a mother of two children and a prominent international representative?

When I first became Japan’s representative, my child was only two years old — a crucial time in any mother’s life. Balancing the responsibilities of motherhood with the demands of preparing for an international pageant required careful planning and time management. I found myself selecting lessons and dresses during whatever free time I had. It was essential to switch between my roles as a mother and as Japan’s national representative. None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of my husband, which deepened my sense of gratitude. Attending the world tournament made me realize that I want my children to explore the world as well; the joy and excitement of international experiences are beyond what one can find in Japan alone.

3 What inspired you to pursue a career in international representation, and how has your experience as Mrs. Asia International 2019 and Mrs. Queen 2016 influenced your work?

When I competed in Mrs. Queen, there was a stipulation that winning the Grand Prix would allow me to compete on the world stage. Encouraged by a friend, I decided to take the leap. Mrs. Asia International was my first time participating in a global tournament, and it was more challenging than I had anticipated. The schedule was packed with rehearsals, tours, and events in unfamiliar places. Despite the challenges, the experience was invaluable. I forged friendships that transcended borders, which became a cherished part of my life.

4 Could you share some of the challenges you faced while preparing for these titles and how you overcame them?

One of the most significant challenges I faced was dealing with conflicts among other Japanese participants. In a competition, everyone is focused on winning, which can create tension. Differences in opinions and perspectives often arise among those aiming for the same goal. While the pageant may seem glamorous, the journey to get there is demanding and difficult. However, I focused on the importance of collaboration, even with those I might have disagreed with, and worked hard to create a positive experience for everyone involved. I approached the tournament with gratitude for all the hard work, the support from my family, friends, and mentors, and saw it as an opportunity for personal growth.

5 How do you manage to stay connected with your Japanese roots while representing Japan on the global stage?

To represent Japan globally is to share the beauty and uniqueness of my homeland, my birthplace. But it’s also about being a mother and a woman who aspires to inspire women around the world. Mrs. Independent International aligns deeply with my personal wishes and provides the perfect platform for new challenges. I’m honored to represent Japan and hope to inspire others through my journey. I would be truly grateful for the support in this new chapter as Japan’s representative.

The True Treasure of Life:
A Reflection on Family and the Journey Through Infertility
Family is the cornerstone of my life. The love and bonds we share within a family are immeasurable, more valuable than anything this world could offer. This belief, once deeply rooted in my heart, grew even stronger as I faced the challenges of infertility treatment.
The path of fertility treatment is one of immense emotional, physical, and mental difficulty. The journey often feels like a solitary battle, where hope and despair intertwine. It is in these moments of struggle that I came to understand the true worth of family. The desire to build a family, to give and receive love, is one of the most fundamental human longings. When this wish remains unfulfilled, it leaves a void that nothing else can fill.
Through my own experience and witnessing the hardships of others, I realized that family transcends mere blood ties. It is a manifestation of love and a priceless treasure that gives life its deepest meaning. This understanding strengthened my resolve to help those facing infertility. I want to see a world where more people can experience the profound joy of family. To achieve this, we must improve the environment surrounding fertility treatment, providing both understanding and effective care.
One thing I know for certain is that family is the most important treasure in life. It surpasses the value of any material possession or worldly achievement. This is why I am committed to advocating for better fertility care, so that more people have the opportunity to experience this extraordinary gift.
In November 2024, I will participate in the Miss Independent International contest. Through this platform, I hope to inspire women around the world, particularly those grappling with infertility. My message is clear: we are never alone, and we must never give up on the dream of building a family. Together, we can create a world where everyone has the chance to hold this treasure close to their hearts.
